“It’s good for
the heart”
On May 28 2013, General Mills released
their first ever biracial commercial for Cheerios. A year later during the
Super Bowl, they launch another commercial for cheerios using the same biracial
couple. The public bashed the commercial for promoting biracial families. Surprisingly,
a lot of people took offense and expressed themselves through social media. Yet
the question is still asked, Will Racism End in Obamaerica? I believe the reaction
by the public answered that. People believe ever since President Obama was elected,
it concluded that racism is dead. Unfortunately, racism is not dead. Americans
today still show signs of racism in our society.
In the book Racism Without Racists, Bonilla-Silva stated that “It affects them
in hospitals […] or doing almost anything in America” (Bonilla-Silva pg 210).
The author was discussing how racial discrimination does not only occur in jobs
and housing. Racial Discrimination affects things that a normal human being
does. According to Bonilla-Silva, it affects them in restaurants, trying to buy
cars, even hailing a cab. Minorities are steadily facing racism today in our
society. I remember a discussion in class where we talked about the idea of “Colorblind
Racism”. People are not aware of the new racism. Americans believe now that
Obama is elected everyone is equal and racism is gone. However, results show
otherwise. Some Americans cannot accept the idea of a biracial family. Some
people still believe that whites should marry whites and not black men. Those
who are in biracial relationships consistently face criticism.
According to Detroit Free Press, a
biracial couple spoke on the concept of the controversial Cheerios commercial.
A biracial coupled stated “Everywhere we go people are judging us” The couple
went on and talked about how people in their town viewed them together. There
have been people who told her she was dating the wrong guy. She even mentioned
her church did not accept them as a couple. The fact that her church did not
accept them together speaks on behalf our society. Those who believe that
racism is gone are not aware of what happening in their environment. They are
an example of colorblind racism. We hear different stories of racism happening
in our society. But Obama is president we’re not racist? Wrong. Barack Obama is
the president not Jesus. Although we elected him, does not mean the world is a
better place. Some Americans do not believe in diversity.
According to CNN, Kareey and Misty were friends
and turned into lovers. They are a biracial couple who were not wanted by her
family and some of her peers. When Misty’s father asked her do you plan to have
kids with this black man? She said yes. Her father responded that her children
will not be accepted and loved. The audacity for her father to say strong words
about her family says a lot. She even had a stranger tell her, do you want me
to burn a cross on your front lawn? Racism doesn’t exist? I feel that racism
has been worst since Barack Obama has been president. I feel that there are
some Americans who are not pleased with Obama being in office. Obama’s campaign
was geared towards change. It takes time for a major change to occur. All we
can do is face racism and defend ourselves.
