When people watch the television, they see everything that is being reported on across the county, even the world. They see the ideas of other people in the form of television shows, and they see the great idea of reality T.V. When I watch television, I see just how the world is perpetuating stereotypes because that's what brings in ratings. Lets talk about what it is that people do in the world of entertainment that perpetuates this.

There happens to be a t.v. show called "The First 48". In this show, police officers in various cities work on a homicide case for 48 hours, after that they pretty much give up because the trail is all but lost. I used to watch this show quite a bit with my Dad. What I never realized until I watched a stand up comedy special in which the comedian did a bit about this show, was that just about every single homicide was done by black guys in the projects. Usually the murder was over drugs or a street feud, and everyone that they interview was in stereotypical gang clothing and spoke ebonics. Not once did the show really try to do any sort of murder in a white area of town, and question white people. To me, this show just made its living off of showing the world the streets, and making it seem like if you go to the hood of these cities, you're going to have a bad time. The show never attempted to go to a trashy white area of any city and show how drug addled they can be, but instead chose to show black folks fighting over crack. Watching it now, its kind of appalling just how much the show abused this formula.
Why is that kind of formula on t.v. so successful? People eat that up. They want to watch the white detective run around and round up some gangsters in a black neighborhood so that people at home can sit in their Lay-Z-Boy recliners with their Bud Light and say, "I tell you, those blacks sure are a scary bunch!". Why isn't white America ever satired? Eddie Murphy did it, and it was genius. Dave Chappelle did it, and it was genius, but it seems like no one else out there really wants to go out and show just how racist the world really is.
When you turn on Fox News, if you can stomach it, you can watch Bill O'Reilly be the biggest asshole on the face of the planet, and wonder how he hasn't been killed yet. (Seriously, how has no one gotten pissed off enough to the point of just beating him to death. Its a legitimate shock to me.) The news outlets of the world perpetuate stereotypes based on stories they report on. Radio personalities using slurs, Bill O'Reilly being Bill O'Reilly, reporting cases involving black crime as opposed to what crimes white people commit, its kind of disgusting how imbalanced the country is when it comes to race and the media. It seems like now the only crime worth reporting on is being black and leaving the house.
