Over
the years race and media has been strange together. Racism in a way is shown in
the media but now days it’s very low. I remember shows like the Jefferson’s
which is about an all-African American family life which there theme song has “fish
don’t fry in the kitchen” which to me is a bit racist because of the
stereotypes of African Americans loving fried food. Compare that to the show “Brady
bunch” where it’s all about a wealthy white family and has stress free lives.
The norm on TV shows for couples is
sort of discriminated. One example that I see a lot on TV is interracial
couples vs same race couples. The inter racial couples tend to fight more,
break up, go through a hell of lot more stress than the same race couples. Same
race couples tend to be happier, stress free, and have a better living. This just
shows how race is displayed in our eyes yet some of us are too blind to see it.
The media do play a huge role when dealing with racism because most of it is
hidden or ignored. Recently there’s been the Donald Sterling case on the media
about his racial actions towards people of color. The media did a fantastic job
putting the spot light on him but what about his previous charges when being
racism? It only matters when something of importance is affiliated with it.
The media won’t bring up every case
of racism but only the ones that has “meaning” in their eyes. The media lack
full coverage on racism and only put what they think should be on their. The media
do not warn minorities of racism but yet blind them with other ideals. In general
the media is very lousy with dealing with the racism out there but yet portrait
the negatives in races by putting shows and so what with minor racism in it. We
just are too blind to see every aspect of it.
