The movie
American History X the main character is a young white man named Derek. This movie
shows many scenes of racism that Derek and his group of neo-Nazi has for any
other race other than whites. In the movie there are many racial slurs, racial
profiling and stereotypes. Derek had a lot of rage towards other races because it’s
what he was raised on. His father had a lot of hate towards other races and it
was passed down. Derek then went on to prison for killing two black males and
he saw a different world in prison. He noticed how some people were skin heads
but didn’t have the same views and beliefs. Some skin heads associated with
blacks to get what they needed in prison. This opened Derek’s eyes and he began
to change his views on racism.
In the book of “Fires
of Hatred,” Naimark states, “Nazis thought that the Jewish race had kept the Germans
from reaching their goals,” (57). This is what Derek and his group of neo-Nazis
believed. They were followers of Hitler, they agreed with all of Hitler’s
actions. Derek’s group of neo-Nazis wanted ethnic cleansing in their
neighborhoods. The group of Neo-Nazis in the movie went to a grocery store and destroyed
it because the store were hiring and paying immigrants and the neo-Nazis believed
these immigrants were taking money away from them as white people. In chapter 3
of Naimark book he talks about how, the Chechens and Ingush, about a half
million, wanted to keep their cultural ways and their religious ways, and this
threatened the Soviet authorities. The
Soviets decided to deal with them once and for all and they ordered all
Chechens and Ingush out of their homelands. Both of these situations relate
because they are both forms of ethnic cleansing which the Neo-Nazis in the
movie were trying to pursue. Both the
Soviets and Neo-Nazis in the movie felt threatened by these other races with
their jobs, religious ways, and cultural ways and they both wanted to deal with
this problem by ethnic cleansing.
