Emily Tomkins
Chapter 4-5
Taking Back what is Mine Not Yours
The
Expulsion of Germans from Poland and Czechoslovakia, discussing the ethnic cleansing
and genocide of the monitories of the German people within these countries. Both
governments wanted to exile the German people with-in their countries. Polish and Czechoslovakia government were
talking to Stalin for advice of how to rid themselves of the Germans in their
country, (Naimark, Page 109). When WWII had really began many Germans were forced to leave their homes
within these boarders, and most western
governments were fine with this type of behavior. During WWII, and the end of WWII, ethnic
cleansing started removal of the Germans of at least 700,000 to 800,000 people,
( Naimark, Page 111). Post
WWII Czechoslovakia and Poland committed extreme acts; as
the same thing as the Nazi did to the Jews. Czechoslovakia had force
Germans into labor camps where they treated inhumane ways. After WWII Poland
set up former concentration camps for Germans to live in where many women, men,
and children died as result of the brutal treatment, (Naimark Page 129). The
long hatred of Germans with Poland helped
emphasis the justification for ethnic cleansing in their state. People of
Poland were not free when Germany occupied them and infected this hatred for
Germans. The cycle of violence did reach an end after WWII; despite the fact,
everyone had suffered from it, but these
governments allowed the violence to happen. The chaos was overwhelming for the governments
and it was difficult to gain control. In
a way, for the government to make sense of the control they lost was in the
form of ethnic cleansing and genocide. This
ideology created a sense of justification to perceive them as victims and to create
another form of ethnic cleansing. It justifies the revenge on the German people
living in Czechoslovakia and Poland, (https://clg.portalxm.com/library/keytext.cfm?keytext_id=183).
It
did not matter if the German were or were not affiliated of the Nazi party their
governments felt they were able to rid themselves of the German population in
their country. This is seen even America’s
history when we arrived here. We pushed away Native Americans from their homes,
so we could create villages and homes. It started slowly, but in the end this
was ethnic cleansing toward Native Americans.
It was difficult for Native Americans to find shelter when they were
force to move, just as the Germans who
were force to leave their homes. This is not talked about in our history and
often people are unaware of what happened to Native
Americans. Germans at the time were being
exiled and murder; many Europeans countries did not do much to prevent a
genocide from happening after WWII. It was just accepted as fate for these
people because they represented an ideology that may or may not agreed with
personally.
The Wars of Yugoslav Succession, was ethnic cleansing against
Bosnian Muslims. I would like to highlight the sexual violence many Bosnian
Muslim women had to deal with. Serb soldiers used sexual assaults to as a tactic.
It was estimated more than 50,000 women
were raped (Naimark Page 169). It was acceptable
behavior to rape women and there was nothing they could do about. There were
detention centers where many Bosnian Muslim women were treated as sexual
objects. Being objectified form rapes,
or gang rapes; which soldiers were part
of this ethnic cleansing. In Darfur rape
was a form as a weapon, and exploiting women and girls was part of their daily
life. Ethnic Cleansing is subjective between genders because women are targeted
as a certain form of ethnic cleansing. This form torture not only leave physical
results but psychological results. There is perspective culturally of how rape
is viewed with women, and many women fear stigma from stemming with rape.
Because women biologically carry life they are targeted in genocides and ethnic cleansing.
