Evil Masquerade
After reading Fires of Hatred, the one image I cannot get out of my head is when Zawadski
decided to intrude into people’s homes to remove the “German” Language. This reminded
me of the movie Schindler's list. There
was a part where soldiers were told to go into a neighborhood and kick everyone
out. The reason why was because they were Jewish and it was wrong to support
Jews during the Hitler era. Everyone was aware of what was happening, however,
no one really wanted to help.
According to Naimark, he states “He
suggested […] intrusion into people’s homes to remove German inscription on
albums, paintings, wall-hangings, and calendars” (Naimark pg.136). Zawadzki
ordered his troops to remove any German related things throughout the
neighborhoods because they were disobeying the laws. The anti- German law was
established so no one will speak of Germany. If prosecutors were caught, they
could have been killed or arrested. This is identical to the one of the scenes
in Schindler’s list. People were
treated maliciously for an idiotic reason. The fact that these people were
being punished because of their culture is immoral. I believe that they do not
have the right to bombard into people’s homes and dictate how they should live.
Hotel Rwanda clearly depicts how individual’s rights were being violated.
In
the movie Hotel Rwanda, It was almost as if they needed to establish some
military on their own to defend themselves. Innocent children and families were
being killed just because they were Tutsi. Tutsis were at a disadvantage
because the Hutus gathered together and were a force to be reckoned with. It
amazes me to see how many people knew these events and did not do anything. For
example, America sent buses to shuttle their people out of the hotel where some
Tutsi stood at. America did not intervene even though they were well aware of
this. It was obvious that the Tutsis needed help but it took forever to come. They
even called for help but help was nowhere to be found. It was as if people did
not care that families and homes were being destroyed. The Tutsis were hiding
at the hotel because they were being targeted by the Hutus. If they were to be
caught in the streets, the Hutus were going to kill them all. This reminded me of a speakeasy.
During the probation stage, no one was
allowed to speak of pubs or drink liquor. However, people still created secret
pubs to sell and drink illegal liquor. If violators were caught, there would
have been consequences. Every time people went to the bars, they had to say a
password to get in. If they were to be caught, they could have been sentenced
to prison or whatever the government wanted during that time. People did not
want to get caught by the police official which is why they created speakeasys.
Although the consequences may not have resulted in death for their actions, in
Ukraine we are noticing the modern Nazis according to sources. John Baird, a foreign
affairs minister, stated “Russia's troop presence in Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula [is
similar] to Hitler's invasion”. As I stated before, this is our modern
version of Hitler. According to the media, Russia troops invaded Ukraine and
have been fighting for some time now. Ukrainians are struggling to defend
themselves against Russian militia. Russia troops have destroyed Ukrainians
homes and towns. As well as, they have killed many citizens of Ukraine. Even
though we try to prevent another Hitler from happening, we are actually seeing
one take place currently. People rather turn the other way around than to stop
the evil masquerade.
